Joan Free Thompson, of Issaquah, died Monday after suffering a heart attack earlier in the week.

Joan was raised on a farm in Varner, Ark., and married Joe Clyde Thompson on March 11, 1943. They lived in Coral Gables, Fla., where Joe was based as a pilot for Eastern Airlines. Joan enjoyed taking care of their four children and developed a lifelong love of golf.
They retired to Fairfield Bay, Ark., living on the golf course. More recently, she lived at University House, Issaquah, to be closer to her children. She enjoyed an occasional trip to the driving range, and managing the family farm in Arkansas.
Joan was known for her sense of humor and wit, often shared with her many golf partners. She will be missed by many in Florida, Arkansas and Washington.
A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held in Fairfield Bay, Ark., this summer when her ashes will be buried next to her husband at Woodland Memorial Park.
She is survived by her four children, Steven D. Thompson, of Portland, Ore., Susan Free Howe, of Salt Lake City, Utah, Cathy Jo Linn, of Sammamish, and James E. Thompson, of Petersburg, Ky.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
