Christopher Matthew Linden, 45, went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 14, 2013.

Chris was born Aug. 14, 1968, in Vallejo, Calif., to Gail Elizabeth Linden of San Diego, Calif. Chris spent his early childhood enjoying the beautiful beaches of San Diego, and moved with his family to Issaquah when he was 9 years old.

Christopher Linden

Christopher Linden

Here, Chris graduated from Issaquah High School and, after several career starts, settled into employment at Lowe’s Hardware Store. When Chris’ parents moved to the Flathead Valley in Montana, Chris followed, transferring to the Lowe’s in Kalispell.

Chris had a smile that would light up the darkest day! He was born with cerebral palsy, but never considered himself different from others, or short-changed in life. He loved music from an early age and could name any song or artist with just a few bars hummed, and he loved old movies, Disney movies … any movie! Chris also loved sports, and was overjoyed that his beloved Seattle Seahawks were having a winning season this year.

He was a most gentle, kind man, humble and always putting others’ needs before his own, soft-spoken and kind-hearted, with an unconditional love for others. Chris was simple in his desires and needs in life, with a heart filled with gratitude for the blessings he had been given in life.

He loved the Lord with a childlike trust and faith, and also loved his family, his church family and his “Lowe’s” family. Chris will be so very missed in this life, but would want his family and friends rejoicing that he is in his new eternal and glorious home in Heaven!

Chris is survived by his mother Gail Walashek; sisters Michelle Walashek and Laura Page; brother Keith Walashek; as well as many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. God’s timing was perfect in taking Chris home to be with his Heavenly Father, the Lord Jesus Christ, and his earthly father Mike, who preceded Chris in death nine months earlier.

Services were held Dec. 27 at the “Lab,” Fresh Life Church, 128 First Ave. E. in Kalispell, Mont.

Acknowledgement cards may be sent to Chris’s family at P.O. Box 111, Lakeside, MT 59922.

Paul Matthews Lawrence returned to his Heavenly Father on Jan. 5, 2014, at 8:57 a.m., in Issaquah.

He was born in Evanston, Wyoming, on Aug. 13, 1960, to David Elmer Lawrence and Karen Blanche Matthews Lawrence. In his youth, he lived in Big Piney, Wyoming, where his father was working in the oil industry.

Paul Lawrence

Paul Lawrence

He loved the outdoors and the various seasons. The big blue skies when the snow came was one of his favorite times of the year. The close community environment was what helped him to develop his love of people and the importance of giving to family, friends and neighbors.

He attended high school at Big Piney High School, and then his senior year he was invited to live with his relatives in Layton, Utah, and he attended his senior year at Davis High School, where he graduated in 1978. He then attended various colleges in the area — Brigham Young University, University of Utah and Utah State. During this time, he was caring for the needs of his mother and sisters because his father has passed away when he was age 18.

While attending college, he worked in retail and in the hospitality industry at The Hotel Utah and The Brigham Street Inn in Salt Lake City, Utah. This career set the stage for who Paul was in his life, someone who was hospitable and focused on helping everyone have an experience of comfort and beauty. He learned in his work attention to detail and a clean, peaceful environment were keys to success at work and relationships.

In 1984, he met his sweetheart Susan at a business function. They soon became great friends and spent a lot of time together snow-skiing, exploring the area around Salt Lake and talking about their future goals. This friendship blossomed to the point where Paul asked for her hand in marriage and they were married Jan. 28, 1985, in Salt Lake City, Utah. They promptly moved to the Seattle area and began their lives together, and lived in this area and raised their family.

Paul was offered a job at Boeing Computer Service working in their networking area. During this time, he completed his education and graduated from Seattle University with a degree in business marketing. After graduation, he was offered a job at Microsoft in marketing. Next, he worked in partnership with his wife in the financial service industry at Piper Jaffray. He then had his own consulting company in marketing, PML Consulting, until his passing.

He was sealed to his sweetheart, Susan Hamblin Lawrence, in the Seattle Temple on Aug. 6, 1987. Paul was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in most every position in the church. He loved serving in the Bishopric of the Issaquah 5th Ward, in the Bellevue Stake, and teaching the youth and working with the young men in the Boy Scouts of America.

His hobbies were activities with his wife and children. He enjoyed most worldwide travel, outdoor activities (especially snow-skiing), humanitarian and church service, performing arts, friends and neighbors. He was a loyal and most giving husband, father, son, brother and friend. He was a great listener and when with him you knew you were loved.

Paul is survived by his wife Susan Hamblin Lawrence; his four children, Megan Brooke Lawrence, Emily Ann Lawrence, Jacob David Lawrence and Alexander Jay Lawrence; his mother Karen Blanche Matthews Lawrence; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathy Marie Lawrence Riordan (husband Larry Riordan, deceased), Linda Sue Lawrence, Diane Blanche Lawrence Brown (husband, Nordell Brown), Julie Lynn Lawrence Peacock (husband, J. Brooks Peacock) and Coleen Kay Lawrence.

He was preceded in death by his father David Elmer Lawrence.

He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Paul’s name to Kids2Families (www.kids2families.org) or to Humanitarian Aid for the LDS Church at www.lds.org.

Ernest Swanson

Ernest Milton “Milt” Swanson, was born March 29, 1918, in Newcastle, to Ernest and Esilda Swanson; he passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, due to complications from a fall.

Milt, a lifelong resident of Newcastle, lived his entire life at the family home — a former mine company house just off Lakemont Boulevard. Frequent travelers on that road will remember the coal car in his front yard and the railroad semaphore he installed at the end of his driveway, rigged to light up and signal when anyone came down the drive.

Ernest Swanson

Ernest Swanson

Milt attended school in Newcastle until the Newcastle kids were transported to Issaquah in the eighth grade, graduating from Issaquah High School in 1936. After high school, he spent three years in Alaska, and then spent five years in the U.S. Coast Guard and received the Air Medal for meritorious achievement in aerial flight as a combat aircrewman.

When he left the Coast Guard he worked in the Newcastle mines for the B & R Coal Co. for 17 years until the last mine closed in 1963. He then worked for more than 20 years at Boeing before retiring to enjoy life in Newcastle.

Milt was a founding member, and past president, of the Newcastle Historical Society, and for many years was one of a small group of “old-time” Newcastle folks who took care of the Newcastle Cemetery. He was thrilled as interest in the history of Newcastle grew and younger members stepped into leadership roles, but he always participated and loved sharing his knowledge about the “old days” with anyone interested.

Milt was there, rain or shine, to talk about Newcastle during the annual Newcastle Days celebration, too. He especially enjoyed working with Vicki Baima Olson and Mike Intlekofer of the historical society who talked with him for hours, developing a living history, and recording information about mining and life in old Newcastle that only Milt still had in his head and heart.

Milt had a “mini museum” in his back yard, where he displayed all kinds of mining artifacts from Newcastle and for several years had students from the Issaquah School District visit his museum for a tour when they studied local history. He loved having the students visit, and their thank you letters were treasures of his.

He was named the Newcastle Citizen of the Year in 1997, and in 2008 he was given the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce Diamond Award for Community Involvement by a Senior. Both awards he proudly displayed in his home.

Milt was also a lifetime member of Tyee Masonic Lodge No. 115, the Renton Elks and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Many things kept Milt young at heart — probably mostly his very inquisitive mind. He was interested in everything and everyone he met. He read voraciously until declining eyesight in his 90s made that impossible. If something had an engine, he could fix it or make it better than ever. He was a recycler long before it became common practice. After he retired, one of his loves was taking railroad speeder trips with a great group of friends; they traveled all over Washington, Oregon and Idaho, and made a very memorable trip to the Yukon as well.

He loved going to Starbucks in Newcastle and having “his usual” — a single tall latte with a shot of caramel. The baristas knew him by name and his order when he walked in the door. Susanna and Bill Stratford and their boys Liam and Declan were very special to him, as were his other neighbors, extended family and friends.

Milt lived independently in the family home until last November, when he moved two miles away into Regency Assisted Living in Newcastle. He said he was glad he was just moving from one side of Newcastle to the other.

Milt is survived by his sister Ruth Parrott, nephew Craig Parrott (Anna), nieces Karen Wick and Lorraine Morton, great-nephews Martin and Brian Wick and great-nieces Allison Thompson (Dan) and Lesley Parrott. He was preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Esilda, his sister Frances Callaghan, and brothers John Swanson and George Swanson.

Services were held Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at Greenwood Memorial Park with burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Renton.
